Term Life Insurance in San Mateo

A term policy lasts a fixed stretch, most often 10, 20 or 30 years, and pays the face amount to your beneficiaries if you die before it ends. We match the amount and length to your debts, review each application answer with you and set up beneficiaries so the claim stands.

How a term policy works and who it suits

Every term policy comes down to two numbers: how much it pays and how many years it lasts. The premium does not change during those years, and nothing accumulates as cash value. Because you pay only for the protection itself, a dollar of premium buys much more coverage than whole life would. That makes term the natural fit when a need will eventually end.

Good examples are a mortgage balance, the years until your kids finish school, a business loan you personally guaranteed, or the income your spouse would need until retirement. We list those obligations and their timelines first, then build the policy around them instead of picking a round number.

Our approach is safety first in a practical sense: the policy has to hold up when your family files a claim. That means honest answers on the application, beneficiaries that match your current life and a term that does not expire a few years before the debt does. On the Peninsula, where mortgages and childcare run high, even a short gap can be costly.

What we handle on a term life policy

Needs calculation by obligation
We add up income replacement years, debts, education costs and final expenses, then subtract coverage you already have. Group life through an employer counts, but we flag that it usually ends when you leave the job.
Term length matching
We match the term to the longest obligation. Sometimes two policies work better, such as a 30-year policy for the mortgage and a 20-year policy for the school years, so coverage steps down as needs shrink.
Carrier and rate class comparison
Carriers weigh blood pressure, cholesterol, build and family history differently. We compare where you are likely to land, from Preferred Plus to Standard, before you apply.
Application accuracy review
We go through your medical history and medications with you before anything is submitted. During the two-year contestability period, a carrier can investigate and deny a claim over a misstatement, so we get it right the first time.
Beneficiary setup
We name primary and contingent beneficiaries and explain why insurers will not pay a minor child directly. A trust or a custodian under the California Uniform Transfers to Minors Act solves that.
Rider review
We explain the conversion privilege, waiver of premium and accelerated death benefit for terminal illness, and which ones are worth paying for in your case.

When term coverage makes sense

  • Work is your only source of coverage

Group life from an employer is usually one or two times your salary and ends when you switch jobs. Your own policy goes wherever you go.

  • You have a new home loan or a new baby

Each brings a long, set obligation, and term coverage is designed for exactly that kind of time frame.

  • Your current term is nearly over

After the level period, renewal premiums climb every year. Looking a few years ahead keeps your conversion choices open while you are still healthy enough to qualify.

  • Your beneficiary form is outdated

A former spouse or a parent who has died might still be named. The form on file decides who gets paid, not your will.

  • Your family depends on one paycheck

When a single income pays the mortgage and bills, losing it would hurt right away. Term life fills in that income for the years it counts.

How we set up your policy

  1. 1

A phone conversation about your obligations

We ask about income, debts, children, existing coverage and health. It takes about half an hour and gives us the numbers to size the policy.

  2. 2

    A side-by-side quote

We show you face amounts, term lengths and likely rate classes from more than one carrier. You see what each option costs and what it leaves uncovered.

  3. 3

    Application and exam

We complete the application together. If the carrier needs a paramedical exam, the examiner can meet you at your office for blood pressure, a blood draw and a urine sample.

  4. 4

    Underwriting, delivery and review

Once approved, we go through the policy with you, confirm the beneficiaries and riders, and point out the free-look period printed in the contract.

The factors behind your term premium

A carrier locks in your rate when underwriting is finished, and that rate holds for the full term. The details you bring to the application keep shaping your cost for decades. We walk through each one so you can see why your quote lands where it does.

Age at application
Premiums rise with each birthday, so applying earlier sets a lower rate that holds for every year of the policy.
Medical history and underwriting class
Blood pressure, cholesterol, build, prescriptions and family history decide which class the carrier assigns. Landing in Preferred instead of Standard can change the premium noticeably.
Nicotine use
Smoking, vaping and chewing tobacco usually put you in a tobacco class, which costs much more. Many carriers reconsider after a period nicotine-free.
Face amount and term length
Higher coverage and longer terms cost more. Laddering two policies can trim the total.
Riders, occupation and hobbies
Added riders raise the premium. Private flying, scuba diving or a hazardous job can add a flat extra charge.

Questions people ask about term coverage

Something not covered here? (650) 397-7958

What can I do when the level period ends?

Once the level period ends, so does your fixed premium. Most carriers allow you to keep going on an annual renewable basis, but the cost climbs sharply each year. You can also convert if your conversion window hasn't closed, or drop the policy once the debt it protected is paid.

Is it possible to switch term life to permanent coverage later?

Many term policies come with a conversion privilege good until a certain age or policy year, and no new medical exam is needed. That guards you if your health declines. Our Whole Life Insurance and Universal Life Insurance pages describe what you would be converting to.

Can I rely on the coverage from my employer?

Rarely by itself. Group coverage often amounts to one or two times your salary and usually stops, or has to be converted at a higher price, when you leave the job. We include it in the math, but we don't make it the foundation of your plan.

Do I need to take a medical exam?

It depends on the carrier, the coverage amount and your age. Some people qualify for accelerated underwriting, where the insurer checks prescriptions and medical records rather than taking blood. Others need a short paramedical visit, and the examiner can meet you at work.

What sets term life apart from mortgage protection insurance?

Mortgage protection is generally written to match the loan balance, and some versions shrink as you pay it off. Level term pays the full face amount to your beneficiaries, who can spend it on the mortgage or anything else. Our Mortgage Protection Insurance page lays out the comparison.
