Universal Life Insurance in San Mateo
Permanent coverage with premiums you can raise or lower is the core of this product. That same adjustability is what lets a policy lapse when nobody is watching it. We build each policy on cautious interest assumptions and recheck it yearly, so the death benefit is still there for your beneficiary.

How a universal life policy works, and who it suits
Inside every universal life contract sit two moving pieces: the death benefit and an account that holds cash value. Monthly, the carrier adds credited interest to that account and subtracts the cost of insurance plus administrative fees. The premiums you send top the account back up. The coverage remains active for as long as the balance never reaches zero.
That mechanism is where our safety-first approach begins. Insurance charges climb with age, and credited rates can drop. A policy paid at the thinnest possible level on a hopeful illustration may look healthy for a decade, then empty out when you are in your seventies. We set funding so the policy survives under the guaranteed column, not only the projected one.
This product tends to fit people who want lifelong protection but need more room to vary payments than whole life gives, or who want permanent coverage at a smaller outlay and accept that it must be monitored. If your need ends in 20 or 30 years, term life insurance is usually the simpler choice.
What we cover when we set up your policy
Choosing the policy type
We lay out how guaranteed universal life, current-assumption universal life and indexed universal life differ. Guaranteed UL gives up most cash value growth in exchange for a locked-in death benefit. Indexed UL credits interest tied to a market index, limited by caps and participation rates.
Death benefit option
Option A keeps a level death benefit, so rising cash value lowers the insurer's risk and your charges. Option B pays the face amount plus cash value, which costs more each month. We show you both side by side.
Stress-tested illustrations
We run the illustration at the guaranteed minimum rate and at a reduced current rate, not only the headline figure. You see the age at which the policy would lapse under each case before you sign.
No-lapse guarantee rider
Some carriers attach a rider that holds the death benefit in place as long as a set premium arrives on schedule, even after the cash value is used up. We check whether your carrier offers one and spell out exactly what it demands of you.
Beneficiary and ownership setup
We walk through naming primary and contingent beneficiaries and who should own the policy. Getting this right at the start avoids probate delays and tax surprises later.

When universal life makes sense for you
- Your need lasts as long as you do
- You want a death benefit paid no matter when you die, to cover estate costs, support a dependent with special needs or fund a business partner buyout. A term policy would expire before that obligation does.
- Your income rises and falls
- Business owners and people paid on commission often want to pay more in good years and less in thin ones. Universal life permits that, within the limits the contract sets.
- Whole life feels too locked in
- Whole life sets one premium for life. Universal life can provide permanent coverage at a smaller required payment, provided you take on the job of watching it.
- You own an older UL policy nobody has checked
- Contracts sold in the 1980s and 1990s were commonly illustrated at rates well above what carriers credit today. Without a recent in-force illustration, the date the policy runs dry may be far sooner than you think.
How the process runs
- 1
Phone conversation
We start by phone with your goals, budget, health basics and any existing coverage. That tells us which policy type is worth quoting.
- 2
Quotes and illustrations
We gather quotes from carriers and prepare illustrations at guaranteed and reduced rates. We explain the surrender charge schedule, since cash taken out in the early years can cost you.
- 3
Application and underwriting
Underwriting may include a paramedical exam, prescription records and a medical questionnaire. Your health class drives the cost of insurance, so accurate answers protect the policy from later disputes.
- 4
Delivery and annual review
When the policy arrives we go over the contract with you. Each year we request an in-force illustration and adjust premiums if crediting rates or charges have shifted.
What sets the price of a universal life policy
Universal life has no single fixed price. You pay what it takes to meet the monthly charges and keep the cash value in good shape. A few factors decide that amount, and we point out where each one shows up in your illustration.
- Age and underwriting class
- The monthly cost of insurance depends on your age and the rating class you get in underwriting. A preferred rating at 45 costs far less per month than a standard rating at 60.
- Face amount and death benefit option
- A bigger death benefit means bigger charges. Option B costs more because the carrier is on the hook for the face amount plus the cash value.
- Policy type and guarantees
- A guaranteed UL policy with a no-lapse guarantee for life costs more than a current-assumption policy paid at the minimum. What the higher premium buys is certainty.
- How fully you fund it
- Paying more than the minimum builds a cash cushion that can absorb later charge increases. Paying in too much can fail the IRS seven-pay test and make the policy a modified endowment contract, which changes the tax treatment of withdrawals.
Universal life questions we hear often
- Could my universal life policy lapse even with every premium paid?
- It can, when your payments fall short of the charges over the years. That is the problem we see most often with universal life. Adding a no-lapse guarantee rider, or paying at a cautious level and reviewing the policy every year, cuts that risk a great deal.
- How does universal life differ from whole life?
- Whole life keeps one premium for good, grows cash value on a guaranteed schedule and often pays dividends. Universal life lets you change your payments, and in some cases the death benefit, but its cash value moves with credited rates and monthly charges. Our whole life insurance page covers the fixed option in more detail.
- Is it possible to borrow from the cash value?
- Once cash value has built up, you can take a policy loan or a partial withdrawal. Loans left unpaid gather interest and shrink the death benefit. A large loan can also push the policy into a lapse, and lapsing with a loan outstanding can leave you with taxable income.
- How safe is indexed universal life?
- Most indexed UL policies have a floor, commonly zero, so a down year does not take away credited interest. Caps hold back the gains, and the monthly charges keep coming out. We run illustrations at modest crediting rates, not the top rate allowed.
- What should I do about a UL policy I bought years ago?
- Request an in-force illustration from the carrier at both current and guaranteed rates, or have us ask for it with you. If it shows the policy lapsing too soon, you can pay more, reduce the face amount or replace the policy after a careful side-by-side review.
